Our mouths and bathroom are full of bacteria. This makes you wonder if your toothbrush can really be as clean as it should be. Is sanitizing your toothbrush necessary for a clean mouth?
Difference Between Sanitize and Sterilize
Many people will get the terms sanitize and sterilize confused. They are not the same thing. Sanitizing involves killing 99.9% of bacteria. When something is sterilized, all living organisms will be destroyed.
Should I Sterilize?
According to the American Dental Association, there is no product that is effective at sterilizing a toothbrush. In addition, they believe it isn’t necessary.
Ways to Keep the Toothbrushes Clean
There are steps you can take to keep your toothbrush clean.
· Let it air dry standing up
· Don’t allow it to touch other toothbrushes
· Replace the brush every three to four months or when bristles begin to wear
· Don’t share toothbrushes
· Rinse the toothbrush in warm water after use
It will not damage your toothbrush to let it soak in a mouthwash, but it also doesn’t help you keep it clean either. If you choose to use a mouthwash for soaking, don’t let it sit for longer than 15 minutes at a time.
It also isn’t advisable to use your dishwasher or microwave as a means for disinfecting. If you were thinking about buying an ultraviolet light, don’t. The CDC stated that these devices can actually cause damage to your toothbrush.
When the Family is Sick
There is an exception to these guidelines. If someone in the family is ill, you have a higher risk of infection. In these cases, you might want to replace the toothbrushes in the house to be safe. Another option would be to use disposable toothbrushes during the illness and discarding them when it is over.
